ON CREATION OF NIGERIA POLICE FORCE

By section 214(1) of the Constitution (as amended), the Nigeria Police Force is created which is known as the Nigeria Police Force, and subject to the provisions of the section, no other police force shall be established for the Federation or any part thereof.

The Nigeria Police Force shall be organized and administered in accordance with such provisions as may be prescribed by an Act of the National Assembly and the members of the Nigeria Police Force shall have such powers and duties as may be conferred upon them by law.

ON ESTABLISHMENT OF NIGERIA POLICE FORCE AND DUTIES OF

Section 3 of the Police Act provides that there shall be established for Nigeria, a Police Force to be known as the Nigeria Police Force.

The Police shall be employed for the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the preservation of law and order, the protection of life and property and the due enforcement of all laws and regulations with which they are directly charged, and shall perform such military duties within and outside Nigeria as may be required of them by, or under the authority of this or any other Act.

ON WHETHER POLICE CAN RECORD STATEMENT OF ACCUSED AND INTERPRET TO HIM

It is the practice and procedure of the police to record the statement of the accused person and interpret same so long as the officer follows the laid down procedure in obtaining the statement of the accused person, the statement is recorded in the language he understands and it is interpreted
